My story
It all started with doodles. The margins of my high school notebooks were full of scribbles: fruit, letterforms and sometimes – for LOLs – literal doodles. It was a surprise to nobody that I got a BA in Visual Communications and became a graphic designer.
But I was under-challenged. So, I moved to San Francisco, got a new design job, established a new life… and felt under-challenged in a new location. I decided to do some radical soul-searching by sailing back to Australia on a tiny old boat with a new boy, facing the depths to find something deeper. It was brave and idiotic. Mostly idiotic.
After two years at sea, I wrote a book. To my astonishment, that story sold to five publishers, so I wrote a second book, published stories in Lonely Planet anthologies, created an award-winning blog and got featured in mags worldwide. Elizabeth Gilbert of Eat Pray Love said my writing was ‘Right on the money… and very inspiring.’ WTF 💀
While I loved crafting stories, my days as a full-time writer were spent alone, in a robe, in a state of unhealthy introversion, eating dip with my index finger, writing about travel while pretending I loved endless travel. Home beckoned, as did community, normality and the simple joy of doodling. After I met my soulmate, set roots in the country and became a mum, I merged my first passion of graphic design with my new passion of storytelling, creating Story Shape.
